Radical Georgian Women Writers

THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT!

Mary Lister inherited five volumes of largely unknown letters collected by her great-great-grandmother Theresa Lister/Lewis, herself a novelist historian and campaigner against Slavery.

The collection included letters from Thomas Chatterton, the doomed poet, Byron, David Hume, George III and George IV, and the royal princesses. But one whole volume contained letters to Theresa from women writers such as Maria Edgeworth, Harriet Martineau, Lady Caroline Lamb, Lady Byron, Susan Ferrier, Joanna Baillie and Mary Somerville, the scientist who discovered Neptune.

Mary will give an illustrated talk, with portraits and extracts of their letters.

Mary Lister is a poet and artist, and an author of nine books, including Complete Twerks and her latest, It’s Mythic up North.

These Isles – with Brian Groom

From the bestselling author of Northerners comes a rich and timely cultural, historical and social examination of the entwined histories of Britain and Ireland’s nations – and the people who called them home.

In These Isles: A People’s History of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Brian Groom reveals a colourful and often contested story of the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans and others who have occupied these islands, along with their culture, languages and passions.

Groom explores the role of religion and the British Empire, international diasporas and internal migration, gender relations and war in this entertaining narrative.

With forays into popular culture, sport, music, language, literature and art, These Isles stretches from 800,000-year-old footprints on a Norfolk beach to the changing fortunes of the early 21st century. It offers a uniquely rich and kaleidoscopic vision of the shared stories of people across Britain and Ireland – past and present.

“Entertaining and informative. Groom keeps his history admirably down to earth.” The Times, Book of the Week

Film: 3000 Lesbians Go to York

The York Lesbian Arts Festival, which ran through the early 2000s, was the UK’s largest and longest lasting gathering of lesbian, bi and queer women.

The film, 3000 Lesbians Go to York, tells the story of this Festival, with contributions from leading writers and poets, including Jackie Kay, Stella Duffy, Sarah Water, Val McDermid, Horse McDonald. There are also stories from festival founder Jenny Roberts, who with Ann Croft ran the York independent bookshop Libertas! where the idea of the festival was conceived.

The film, which runs for 1 hour 40 mins, will be followed by a short Q&A with film-maker Jane Traies and book signing of her accompanying book Three Thousand Lesbians Go to York – a treasure trove of inclusive queer history.

About the author and film-maker

Jane Traies is a queer historian, writer and storyteller whose work focuses on preserving the stories of marginalised women’s lives. Her best-known book, Now You See Me, is a collection of older lesbian life stories. Her second life-history collection, Free to Be Me, captures the stories of a group of lesbian and bisexual women seeking asylum in the UK. Writing jointly with Jacky Bratton, Jane is also half of the sapphic historical novelist Jay Taverner. Their latest title, Liberty, is the fourth adventure in the ‘Brynsquilver’ series. Jane’s latest book, Three Thousand Lesbians Go to York, tells the story of the York Lesbian Arts Festival.
