Kate Rawles – The Life Cycle (Meltham)

Wed 24 Apr, 6:30 pm7:30 pm

About the event

Stories from eco adventurer Kate Rawles, who embarked on an 8,000-mile journey through South America on a bicycle she built herself from bamboo. Her resulting book, The Life Cycle, has twin aims: to tell a cracking good travel story and to leave the reader with an enhanced understanding of biodiversity and why its future concerns us all.

Across the world, we are losing species at such a rate it has been called ‘The Sixth Great Extinction’, caused for the first time in earth’s history by a resident species – us. Nature is not a luxury: it is our life support system, but despite its gravity, biodiversity loss has received much less attention than climate change. The good news is that there is a huge amount we can all do to turn this around.

Kate Rawles grew up largely in Scotland and now lives in Cumbria. A former university lecturer, her aim is to raise awareness and inspire effective, intelligent action on our most urgent environmental challenges. She has written widely on environmental issues: her book, The Carbon Cycle, Crossing the Great Divide was based on a bike ride from Texas to Alaska exploring climate change, and other ‘adventure plus’ journeys include the Gyre to Gaia ocean plastic pollution sailing voyage with Pangaea Exploration. Kate is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a member of The Adventure Syndicate and an Ibex Earth biodiversity ambassador.
