What people think

Read on for feedback from our patrons, performers, audiences, partners and volunteers.

“Huddersfield Literature Festival has now established itself as a dynamic and important part of the Northern literature landscape attracting large audiences from all parts of the community. I’m delighted that we have been able to increase our funding to enable the festival to programme even more diverse work that will entice many more visitors.”
Michelle Dickson, Director North, Arts Council England

Our Patrons

Sir Patrick Stewart OBE & Lemn Sissay MBE

“Arts and culture enhance our lives as individuals and bring us together as a society. As someone whose profession relies on words and the way they are delivered, I’m proud to champion the festival and its activities.”
Sir Patrick Stewart OBE

“Literature broadens the mind and it’s really important to have people coming to Huddersfield to stimulate new ideas and debate. Also, to help people hone their own skills. The festival is a sweet reminder to people of what is theirs.”
Lemn Sissay MBE

“It’s my local festival, I’ve watched it grow into something fantastic and it’s getting better every year. This festival is very important for Huddersfield.”

“One of the most vibrant festivals I’ve had the pleasure to speak at, driven by a true passion for words of every description (plus they do the best teas). I’d come back in a heartbeat.”

““I sometimes say that I only write books in order to go to book festivals. It’s not strictly true but nowhere is it more accurate than at the Huddersfield Literary Festival.”
Alan Johnson

“From the moment I arrived in Huddersfield I was welcomed and looked after in every way. The event was packed with a delightful and engaged audience. Top of my list for a return visit.”
Helen Lederer

“Huddersfield Lit Fest rocks! Get yourself along and have some fun”
Irvine Welsh

“You have made poetry accessible to someone who would normally be watching Match of the Day.”
“Friendly, accessible and not the least bit intimidating. Came on my own to my first ever poetry reading.”
“A fantastic combination of information, passionate enthusiasm and discussion.”
“Thank you for the Open Mic Night. It makes me happy to be from Huddersfield.”
“Loved it! Like Hay coming to Hudds!”
“I want to thank you and your volunteers for a brilliant experience at a recent event. I shy away from many events because I am anxious I won’t be able to access them. Your volunteers could not have been more amazing. I didn’t need to ask for any help because they anticipated what would help me. I entered the event slightly earlier than others, they saw me to my space and were just brilliant. The university itself was so accessible and so pleased was I with all your efforts I had booked another event as soon as I got home. As an English graduate and retired teacher, I now know I can access the things I love outside the home!” JG, wheelchair user

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with the Festival at PPG Canalside. The activities and ‘Snow Lion’ were a big hit with our fans and visitors.” Lesley Turner, HTAFC (Huddersfield Town) training grounds“

“HLF have been phenomenal in raising and promoting literacy standards and instilling a love of reading for our students by coordinating guest speakers into school. For weeks after Juno Dawson’s events students actively debated ideas of Feminism and Gender Identity; gender and sexuality became less of a taboo in school. Lemn Sissay inspired Year 9 students to explore poetry and literature surrounding ideas of identity. Fantastic poetry readings and discussions that helped students to question judgements and contemplate current events.” Jess Hardy, Salendine Nook School
“Please could you pass on my thanks to Jamie DeWolf for spending time at the Youth Offending Team yesterday. I was very impressed with his workshop and somewhat ‘wowed’ by his delivery of his two poems. I do think that for young people involved in offending or ‘at risk’ it is so important that we try to widen their horizons and encourage them to express themselves in different ways.” Penny Lawrence, Seconded Probation Officer – YOT Kirklees
“The festival has a fantastic reputation for promoting Huddersfield as a cultural centre and promoting the importance of the written word. It is these values that we at Ravenhall Risk Solutions Ltd take great pleasure in aligning with and we look forward to working with the festival for many years to come.” Neil Grimshaw, Ravenhall Insurance

Julia Lilof, Festival Manager, with HLF volunteers

“I received a warm welcome from the start. The training sessions were judged perfectly. Each one was varied, interesting and relaxed. I certainly felt well prepared for dealing with any eventualities at events.” Carol

“I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for the festival as it made me challenge my social anxiety and allowed me to be a part of the local community. The training sessions were convenient and useful as it helped me to evaluate roles/skills/tasks that would be required and get to know the other volunteers.” Fatimah

“This has been my third year and my experiences working with the public and volunteers have benefited me more than I can express. The variety of events has improved my confidence skills in management, expanded my understanding of community needs and allowed me to explore my love of literature in diverse and imaginative ways. The other volunteers, as well as the committee, have provided amazing support, companionship and joy throughout the festival period. Alongside this, the training on offer prior to each festival has always made me feel prepared and self-assured in my position as a volunteer.” Rebecca
