Online workshop: Writing text for music
Two online workshops for £20
Thursday 4 March & Thursday 11 March, 7pm-8.30pmWhen the Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 was awarded to Bob Dylan “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, it provoked debate: are song lyrics poetry? What makes a text for music different from a text intended to be read without accompaniment?
In these workshops with poet and fiction writer Helen Mort, we’ll look at techniques for effective lyric writing, creating words for music, the borders between song and poetry and how to blur them. We will focus on prompts to inspire new writing and workshop writing-in-progress.
Helen Mort is an award-winning author and poet based in Sheffield. She has been shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize and Costa Prize and won the Fenton Aldeburgh Prize in 2015. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, she has taught creative writing for over 10 years and is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.
NOTE: These workshops are being organised for HLF by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF) and the booking button will take you to an external booking page.
