Older South Asian Migrant Women’s Experiences of Ageing in the UK

Wed 17 Apr, 11:00 am12:00 pm

About the event

Dr Nafhesa Ali talks about her new book, which provides a complete picture of the experiences of women who migrated from South Asia in the 1960s and 1970s. Sponsored by Radio Sangam

Older South Asian Women’s Experiences of Ageing in the UK is broken up into chapters of childhood, Jawaani (youth), marriage and migration, motherhood, grandparenting and later life. It is the first book of its kind that provides a complete picture of how women who are seen as the ‘first generation’ have settled and aged in the town, with later life reflections as older women.

Dr Nafhesa Ali is a Lecturer in Sociology at Northumbria University and an interdisciplinary Sociologist with expertise in migration and the everyday lives of racialised and minority communities. Nafhesa completed her PhD in 2015 at Huddersfield University and her monograph based on her PhD research, titled Older South Asian women’s experiences of ageing in the UK: Intersectional feminist perspectives will be published in 2024. Her other publications include a co-authored book, Storying Relationships (2021) and she is co-editor for A Match Made in Heaven: British Muslim Women write about Love and Desire (2020).
