Scrolls: The Continuous Page

Artist Lucy May Schofield explores the scroll as a record of time, distance, and unfolding narratives. In this talk and Q&A, she discusses its significance as both a historical form and its contemporary relevance in telling stories alongside her exhibition at West Yorkshire Print Workshop.

Lucy May Schofield is a visual artist who studied book arts at London College of Printing, where she first became fascinated with the printed page. Twenty years later she learnt how to make scrolls in Japan from master craftspeople and is passionate about sharing these skills with others and championing paper-based crafts.

Elected as an Associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a member of the RE council, her works are held in public and private collections including Tate Britain, The Ashmolean Museum and Yale Centre for British Art. In 2021 she was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust grant to develop the sustainability of her practice and was the winner of the Flourish Award for excellence in printmaking in 2020.

West Yorkshire Print Workshop was established in 1984 in Mirfield and recently expanded to a new hub on the Piazza in Huddersfield. WYPW will also be running a free drop-in Letterpress workshop on Saturday 10 May, 11am-2pm.
