HYBRID EVENT – An afternoon with actor Paterson Joseph 2.30pm performance

Sun 26 Mar, 2:30 pm3:30 pm

About the event

Much-loved British actor and playwright Paterson Joseph talks about his celebrated career and his captivating debut novel, based on the true-life story of Charles Ignatius Sancho, who was born on a slave ship and became the first Black person to vote in Britain.

The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho is a tale of adventure, artistry and freedom. Born and orphaned in 1729 on board a ship and sold into slavery, Sancho escaped to the streets of Georgian London, before establishing a life as a theatre actor, writer, acclaimed musician and composer. He campaigned to end slavery, met the King and became the first Black person to vote in Britain.

“This fictional account of a real man’s life resonates with compassion and offers a welcome insight into the presence of Black people in Georgian England.” The Guardian

“An absolutely thrilling, throat-catching wonder of a historical novel. Told with dazzling energy and brilliant panache. Hugely recommended.” Stephen Fry

“Phenomenal! Highly recommended.” Malorie Blackman, author of Noughts & Crosses

Paterson Joseph is a writer and theatre/screen actor. Recently seen on two BBC series, Vigil and Noughts + Crosses, he plays Arthur Slugworth in the new Wonka movie. As well as many theatre credits, including roles at the RSC, Royal National Theatre and Manchester Royal Exchange, his film and TV roles have included Doctor Who, Peep Show, Green Wing, The Beach, Aeon Flux and In the Name of the Father. In 2022, he was announced as the new Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University.
